Seattle Met: John Roderick Takes the Political Stage

AT HIS APRIL CAMPAIGN KICKOFF on Capitol Hill, indie rock star–turned–city council candidate John Roderick hammed it up with a speech that spoofed traditional candidate sound bites. “And now I’m supposed to say, ’Families,’ ” he joked, stomping his foot on the stage. And though he certainly talked about serious issues like police accountability and housing affordability, the 46-year-old front man of the Long Winters—sporting a thick salt-and-pepper beard and Buddy Holly glasses—closed with another comedic turn... THINK PROGRESS: ROCK MUSICIAN CHALLENGES PROGRESSIVE SEATTLE’S QUIET RACISM IN RUN FOR CITY COUNCIL

A few decades ago, you’d have gotten very long odds betting that John Roderick would run for a Seattle city council seat in 2015. Roderick is best known as the frontman for the band The Long Winters and co-host of the podcast Roderick on the Line. Yesterday a small group of Seattle tech executives and venture capitalists wrote an open letter to the tech community encouraging them to get more involved in the Seattle City Council race, saying: “Depending on the outcome, we’ll either have a council that will actively try to punish the tech sector, or a council that can make Seattle a great example of how to grow an economy quickly and well, solving a lot of lingering societal problems in the process.” Continue reading...

Now it's time to usher in our values: inclusiveness, technology being used to spread prosperity. It's time for the prior generation to go into retirement, and for the next generation to start devoting ourselves to public service.” Continue Reading...

The Stranger: John Roderick Thinks You Should Be Able to Take a Train From Ballard to Capitol Hill. Here's How He'd Do It.

On his campaign website, musician and city council candidate John Roderick says, "I believe in trains, in subways, in trolleys, in buses, ride-share, bike-share, trams, water-taxis, gondolas and zip-lines."

Yesterday Roderick, who's running for citywide council position 8, and another candidate, Alon Bassok, who's running for citywide position 9, announced a joint pitch for a "neighborhood municipal rail system." The plan proposes 100 miles of rail over the next 10 years, funded by property taxes of about $200 a year for the average Seattle homeowner. Continue Reading...
